  6. Long before dawn says:

This is a big no-no. Baby ducks from hatcheries do not have the oils on the feathers to waterproof them and keep them afloat. They get the oil from their mother’s feathers. No mother, no oil. No oil, no float. No float, dead duck. See the wet pasted down feathers on the yellow ones? They’ll sink like brick soon. Very easy to lose duckling this way. They’ll also get chilled. Only very shallow water in relation until their size until their real feathers grow in.

    • shadow says:

::cries, hoping all the duckies are ok::

    • anatidaephobia says:

They could have been hatched by a duck then taken in to protect them from males or they might have been abandoned, Ive raised 7 duckings that way.
Even the ones that have the oils on them, if they’ve played silly buggers in the sink they get wet down. Though these duckies look ready for out now.

Still, Cute sink full of little duckies!!

    • Aoife says:

When I volunteered at a wildlife center, one of my responsibilities was to supervise the orphaned ducklings as they swam in a sink (then gently dry them afterward with a fluffy towel and blow dryer *squee*). They need to exercise and get used to a life in water, so, as long as they are closely supervised, swimmin’ in the sink is the best way to do this.

    • Darlene says:

Ducklings love to swim and are very happy when you let them do so. But, they must be supervised when they do so and the water should be warm. Then, they should be thoroughly dried and put in a warm area. If you take good care of them and do it right, they will be OK.

  7. Gail says:

  9. merri says:

That is shallow water for the duckies… they look like little (pacific) black ducks, with the black Zorro mask. I’ve seen them this young in the wild, swimming in the river.

  11. MetroStationGurl says:

OMG!!!!!!!!!!!! Where do you get baby duckies?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

  12. We have two rescued ducks, one male and one female. They are delightful to listen to especially when working in our small yard..they make lovely sounds. We let them onto our patio now and then but they make lots of duck poopy and sometimes eat the plants. Sidney leaves us a splendid duck egg daily.
