We’ve had them here before too, I think… and I forgot what these uber cute little things are.

I have not forgotten that I want one or twelve though ;)

  10. Dr Wicked says:

They are Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrels. Known also as Momonga.

  11. Cindy says:

  12. Tom says:

A dormouse, I think. Just don’t know which one. Obviously A-dor-(mouse)-able!

Southern Flying Squirrels, I think – they’re held aloft entirely by the power of cute!

  14. Brigid says:

You mean the chibi-totoro? The big one is oh-totoro (translates as big totoro). The medium and small ones are chuu- and chibi-totoro, respectively, which means exactly what you may guess.

  15. Joan Scanlan says:

From our experience, they look like flying squirrels. The large eyes (flyers are nocturnal) and black whiskers give it away. They appear to have their tails wrapped up around their bodies. The white fur looks like the tail underside. Squee x10!

  16. Deb Hall says:

I think they’re sugar gliders- they’re the epitomy of cuteness!!

  17. Amy says:

Yeah, not sure what they are, but I’m pretty sure I need one :o ).

    http://fnpw.org.au/Images/Backyard_Buddies/B-mailAugust/Baby_SugarGlider.jpg

  21. Amy says:

As soon as someone figures this out, could you tell the rest of us how you even begin looking something up that you only have a picture of? It always amazes me that someone will just pop right up with the right answer and usually a link to more information.

    • Tom says:

Try http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu or Google image search or Wikipedia. However: you need to have at least some idea what it is. I started with “mouse”, then went up to see the different subspecies of rodents available, looking for similarities like tails and fur.
Or try an infraclass like “Marsupial” and try to dig your way down the tree.

I found similarities with african dormouse and pygmy possum. Too bad I’m unable to see any tail on the picture. If the tail has fur: it’s not a dormouse. If it’s naked: it’s not a possum. If there is no tail it all, it might be a desert microcavy.
I don’t think it’s a glider. They have bushy tails. You would see it on the pic.

    • roastpotato says:

      me too!

    • TinEye reverse image search: http://www.tineye.com/

(Sometimes helpful, sometimes not, but usually a good resource.)

  22. Laurie says:

Japanese dwarf flying squirrel ((Pteromys momonga, Japanese: モモンガ: momonga). Not sure if this has been on here before but it’s been on this or one of the other Cheezeburger sites.

  23. Inga says:

    I think it’s a type of chinchilla.

    • Chilo says:

I would be happy if they were, but even chinchillas aren’t usually that amount of squee :’D tis a Japanese Flying Squirrel or Momonga as you may see by the other posts.

  24. Cam says:

It appears to be a type of flying squirrel, which is why they look so chubby, that is extra skin. The dormouse nose is too long and sugar gliders have a different color pattern.

  25. Cam says:

Ah, a Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel. If you google it, you can find the image.

  26. jennypa says:

They look like sugar gliders to me. Very cute sugar gliders.

  27. Nano's Mom says:

They are Momonga, or Japanese dwarf flying squirrel.
Amy – I remembered where I had seen the picture before so I’m not much help! http://cuteoverload.com/2009/08/12/obviously-created-by-japanese-scientists/

  33. MagickFox says:

I’m pretty positive these are Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrels and they’re absolutely adorable :)

  39. Kelley says:

THE TINY EARS!! THEIR EYES ARE BIGGER THAN THEIR EARS!! IT’S TOO MUCH CUTENESS! I CANNOT TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  40. Purple Sage says:

No, see, this is a Dormouse. And this is a Flying Squirrel. Those kind of look like flying squirrels, but there’s something not quite right about that… It could just be the differences in the pictures, but somehow it doesn’t look quite like the right species. Could be a different breed of Flying Squirrel, though. Similar, at least. I won’t say conclusively one way or the other, but you make up your own mind.

  41. angeluserrare says:

They are flying squirrels, I think, though not sure if they’re northern or southern.

  45. Nat says:

… or Siberian or Japanese. Too many options…

EEEEEE! So much squee! Those tiny paws, those extra-shiny black boot-button eyes, those itty-bitty ears, the totoro reference…..too much to handle!

I think these pocket-sized wonders of the Squeeniverse are baby flying squirrels.

  52. LadyRhian says:

They are Momonga, Dwarf Japanese Flying Squirrels… or Squee-rels, if you want to put it like that.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel

    Other pics:

Apparently, some people make pets out of them:

    Squee-able postage stamp:

  53. Andrew says:

They are Pteromys momonga, Japanese pygmy flying squirrels. It’s my theory that these adorable little creatures were the inspiration for those big-eyed japanese anime characters.

    http://www.momonga.org/ezo-momonga/momojpeg1.html

  54. Eris says:

    It’s a momonga– a Japanese flying squirrel!

  58. Beth says:

They are called “momonga”, they are Japanese dwarf flying-squirrels.

  59. Lambency says:

They’re called Pygmy Flying squirrles. They’re commonly found around the urban regions of Japan and they’re in the family of Sugar Gliders, I believe. But the Japanese name is a Momonga.

  65. Selena S. says:

They are flying squirrels I think.

  66. Magda says:

It’s a Momonga (Japanese dwarf flying squirrel) xD so cute *_*

  67. Rhea says:

Definitely flying squirrels. They’re out at night, hence the big eyes and hardly anyone seeing them. Also known in the back woods as fairy-diddles.

  68. Candice Hope says:

wow, so adorable! their little hands make me think they are wiggling their fingers together and plotting evil, next they will bring their tiny pinkies up to the corner of their mouths and tell us how much money they want. I want one anyway.

  69. Luna says:

anyone who knows who Totoro is has to be one of the coolest people ever! i’m gonna go watch my neighbor totoro now… :)

    • Amy says:

My kids watched that video at least 5,000 times when they were younger.

I strongly suspect that since the critter that looks like Totoro, and the video itself both come from Japan that someone got their inspiration from their own backyard lol.

  70. valw says:

If you google “Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel”, this is the first picture that comes up. I know that doesn’t always mean anything, but it might.

    http://www.flyingsquirrels.com/World/Stamps/index.html

  72. Hightower says:

They seem to be momonga (japanese dwarf flying squirrels) mentioned already many times in these comments, but European common flying squirrel cubs look very much like these in the pic.

Without watching some momonga pics from internet I would have suggested them being young European flying squirrels

  73. Kate says:

They are definitely not chinchillas. A few people already have it right: they are Momongas, or Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. And they are so cute!

  74. Jay Rivers says:

We shalls attacked the hoominz wen theys asleeped.Thank squee we is nocturnal.WE are nocturnal,RIGHT.The others”Uh yea sir”,”U wanna tell him or should I?”

  75. Donna says:

BUT — is their personality as sweet as they look? Or do they bite when annoyed or startled, as sugar gliders and flying squirrels will? Are they housetrainable?
As a housepet, the North American Opossum out-affections even a Golden Retriever, is very clean, and almost never bites.
