Its a Momonga!!! Also known as the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel. *sigh* the japanese always have such cute things…
omg! i kno rite! and they do look like Totoro’s buddies!!! <3<3<3
or totoro’s BABIES!! must… hold… cute…
Totoro, Totoro…
Now I begin to understand why the anime looks the way it does… apparently stuff really looks like that there!
Best comment ever.
And yes…lol it scares me sometimes to think a little land could hold so much squee.
-sighs- i know! i mean they look like something straight from an anime >w< awwwwwww!
They are momonga aka the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel
Those little darlings are West Virginia flying squirrels, possibly young ones.
OMG! Adorable – yeah – what are they? Look at the one in the background peekin’ around the tree! LOL
These might be flying squirrels. The ones from Japan are small and have big, black eyes. They’re very cute!

Oh! My! GEE! too cute I can’t take it!!!!
Flying squirrels?
i think they are chinchilla’s perhaps wild ones as the ears are tiny
I think they are Momongas.
I think they might be baby chinchillas…. They look like baby chinchillas….
I could be really wrong here ^^
The little paws! *faints*
We’ve had them here before too, I think… and I forgot what these uber cute little things are.
I have not forgotten that I want one or twelve though
They are Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrels. Known also as Momonga.
wow, they are totally adorable, I can’t handle it!!! ;p
A dormouse, I think. Just don’t know which one. Obviously A-dor-(mouse)-able!
Southern Flying Squirrels, I think – they’re held aloft entirely by the power of cute!
You mean the chibi-totoro? The big one is oh-totoro (translates as big totoro). The medium and small ones are chuu- and chibi-totoro, respectively, which means exactly what you may guess.
Momonga! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel
From our experience, they look like flying squirrels. The large eyes (flyers are nocturnal) and black whiskers give it away. They appear to have their tails wrapped up around their bodies. The white fur looks like the tail underside. Squee x10!
I think they’re sugar gliders- they’re the epitomy of cuteness!!
I think so, too. A friend has one as a pet.
Yeah, not sure what they are, but I’m pretty sure I need one
).
I don’t think sugar gliders… I had to google them and look!
http://fnpw.org.au/Images/Backyard_Buddies/B-mailAugust/Baby_SugarGlider.jpg
a baby sugar glider <3<3
Are they flying squirrels? Way too cute…
yea I think they are.
I do believe that one peeking around the tree conducted a photobomb.
But they’re all so cute, who cares? <3
Zoe is right! He’s a Photobomb Phenom!
As soon as someone figures this out, could you tell the rest of us how you even begin looking something up that you only have a picture of? It always amazes me that someone will just pop right up with the right answer and usually a link to more information.
Try http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu or Google image search or Wikipedia. However: you need to have at least some idea what it is. I started with “mouse”, then went up to see the different subspecies of rodents available, looking for similarities like tails and fur.
Or try an infraclass like “Marsupial” and try to dig your way down the tree.
I found similarities with african dormouse and pygmy possum. Too bad I’m unable to see any tail on the picture. If the tail has fur: it’s not a dormouse. If it’s naked: it’s not a possum. If there is no tail it all, it might be a desert microcavy.
I don’t think it’s a glider. They have bushy tails. You would see it on the pic.
me too!
TinEye reverse image search: http://www.tineye.com/
(Sometimes helpful, sometimes not, but usually a good resource.)
Japanese dwarf flying squirrel ((Pteromys momonga, Japanese: モモンガ: momonga). Not sure if this has been on here before but it’s been on this or one of the other Cheezeburger sites.
Ah, you are right. Now that you mention it, I finally found the original article here: http://community.livejournal.com/udivit_sozdaniy/45181.html
Sneaky little fur balls! They hide the tail under the belly while sitting, making it pretty hard to identify them as squirrels.
I think it’s a type of chinchilla.
I would be happy if they were, but even chinchillas aren’t usually that amount of squee :’D tis a Japanese Flying Squirrel or Momonga as you may see by the other posts.
It appears to be a type of flying squirrel, which is why they look so chubby, that is extra skin. The dormouse nose is too long and sugar gliders have a different color pattern.
Ah, a Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel. If you google it, you can find the image.
They look like sugar gliders to me. Very cute sugar gliders.
They are Momonga, or Japanese dwarf flying squirrel.
Amy – I remembered where I had seen the picture before so I’m not much help! http://cuteoverload.com/2009/08/12/obviously-created-by-japanese-scientists/
They’re momonga. Japanese flying squirrels.
I love these! What are they!!!!
They have little bitty wings! Ahhhhhhh.
Momonga! Also known as Japanse dwarf flying squirrels.
They are Small Japanese Flying Squirrels (Pteromys momonga). I didn’t look this up. Whenever I don’t know what any animal is, I ask my son. It’s very rare if he does not know the answer.
I’m pretty positive these are Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrels and they’re absolutely adorable
FYI: the picture is of dwarf flying squirrels.
STUPID, STUPID RAT CREATURES!!
Perhaps they’d like some quiche….
I’m pretty sure it’s a type of flying squirrel. I’m just trying to figure out what kind. Definately very Squee-relly!
Momo-san!
They are Japanese dwarf flying squirrels
THE TINY EARS!! THEIR EYES ARE BIGGER THAN THEIR EARS!! IT’S TOO MUCH CUTENESS! I CANNOT TAKE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!
No, see, this is a Dormouse. And this is a Flying Squirrel. Those kind of look like flying squirrels, but there’s something not quite right about that… It could just be the differences in the pictures, but somehow it doesn’t look quite like the right species. Could be a different breed of Flying Squirrel, though. Similar, at least. I won’t say conclusively one way or the other, but you make up your own mind.
Those are momonga, Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. They’re almost too cute to be real…the one in the back is photobombing XD
They’re Flying Squirrels, mostly likely Northern Flying Squirrels. And they’re so squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeable!!!
OH GOD please please someone tell me what these guys are. i am in love with them. if i cannot have one (or twenty) then i must at least find video of them to watch when i’m having a bad day…
They are flying squirrels, I think, though not sure if they’re northern or southern.
… or Siberian or Japanese. Too many options…
Japanese dwarf flying squirrels…I can’t find any good web pages that have other pictures…but a Google image search reveals them to be ADORABLE.
Possibly my favorite squee EVER! They’re a type of flying squirrel http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0H879n9osE&playnext_from=TL&videos=4DoPGqJX43A
OK, that video did it…. I am now in full-blown Squee Shock…. must avoid looking at anything kawaii for the next few hours, or…. or…. *FAINTS* <3 <3 <3
ZOMG – They sound like they’re cheeping!
These are the most adorable dormice evar. The internet has not failed and proven that they are in fact dormice.
http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Dormouse_on_hand.jpg
Squee! I think these adorable little critters are momonga – Japanese flying squirrels.
They are…. Japanese Dwarf flying squirrels. TA-DA. ^_^
SO CUUUUUUUTE!!!!
http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&q=MOMONGA&um=1&ie=UTF-8&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi
EEEEEE! So much squee! Those tiny paws, those extra-shiny black boot-button eyes, those itty-bitty ears, the totoro reference…..too much to handle!
I think these pocket-sized wonders of the Squeeniverse are baby flying squirrels.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel
They are Momonga, Dwarf Japanese Flying Squirrels… or Squee-rels, if you want to put it like that.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_dwarf_flying_squirrel
Other pics:
Apparently, some people make pets out of them:
Squee-able postage stamp:
They are Pteromys momonga, Japanese pygmy flying squirrels. It’s my theory that these adorable little creatures were the inspiration for those big-eyed japanese anime characters.

Momonga, the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel.
http://www.google.com/search?q=japanese+dwarf+flying+squirrel
It’s a momonga– a Japanese flying squirrel!
http://www.momonga.org/
At first, I thought they looked like overfed sugar gliders.
I know what they are they are the cutest litle squee thing ive ever seen OMG I NEED ONE NOW!
They’re Japanese dwarf flying squirrels, also known as momonga.
If they are flying squirrels, this is what they look like as babies. (couldn’t resist. this is the cutest pic ever) http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_xPRJcY91HB4/SiKbsg3AX_I/AAAAAAAAAac/34ymsKAqLlY/s400/Flying+squirrel.jpg
*resists the urge to thrown on a caption* It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this!
They are called “momonga”, they are Japanese dwarf flying-squirrels.
They’re called Pygmy Flying squirrles. They’re commonly found around the urban regions of Japan and they’re in the family of Sugar Gliders, I believe. But the Japanese name is a Momonga.
too cute but not sugar gliders – their ears stick up more… and their heads are shaped differently!
They are flying squirrels!…and probably the cutest ones ever!
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
must not splort….must not splort….must not splort
Japanese dwarf flying squirrel! ….I think.
O.k., the TinEye site did the trick. It lead me around the block a while, but the are Momonga (Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrels). Wikipedia didn’t have a lot, nor did any of the other sites that mention them, but if you google and check out a few of them you can get an idea of what they are like, and there are more pics
).
They are flying squirrels I think.
It’s a Momonga (Japanese dwarf flying squirrel) xD so cute *_*
Definitely flying squirrels. They’re out at night, hence the big eyes and hardly anyone seeing them. Also known in the back woods as fairy-diddles.
wow, so adorable! their little hands make me think they are wiggling their fingers together and plotting evil, next they will bring their tiny pinkies up to the corner of their mouths and tell us how much money they want. I want one anyway.
anyone who knows who Totoro is has to be one of the coolest people ever! i’m gonna go watch my neighbor totoro now…
My kids watched that video at least 5,000 times when they were younger.
I strongly suspect that since the critter that looks like Totoro, and the video itself both come from Japan that someone got their inspiration from their own backyard lol.
If you google “Japanese Dwarf Flying Squirrel”, this is the first picture that comes up. I know that doesn’t always mean anything, but it might.
These stamps are cute too (and of course there’s one for Japan!):
http://www.flyingsquirrels.com/World/Stamps/index.html
They seem to be momonga (japanese dwarf flying squirrels) mentioned already many times in these comments, but European common flying squirrel cubs look very much like these in the pic.
Without watching some momonga pics from internet I would have suggested them being young European flying squirrels
They are definitely not chinchillas. A few people already have it right: they are Momongas, or Japanese dwarf flying squirrels. And they are so cute!
We shalls attacked the hoominz wen theys asleeped.Thank squee we is nocturnal.WE are nocturnal,RIGHT.The others”Uh yea sir”,”U wanna tell him or should I?”
BUT — is their personality as sweet as they look? Or do they bite when annoyed or startled, as sugar gliders and flying squirrels will? Are they housetrainable?
As a housepet, the North American Opossum out-affections even a Golden Retriever, is very clean, and almost never bites.
These are Japanese flying squirrels — as other posts have identified.
Ohmigewd I wanna pinch them X3
They’re so cute I might just die. SQUEE!!!
Ohh man whoever this blogger is is awesome. First it was the rad comment about zelda and king zora
Now totoro ^_^
It reminds me of Fuu’s pet in Samurai Champloo.
Omfs O my freaking squee!!!
it is a sugar glider
In West Virginia they call the flying squirrels “fairydiddles” – the perfect name for perfect squee.
