Best Tiny Kitten Ever

Oh Em Squee. This kitten is the BEST! She truly is an exceptional kitten. I love the sound she makes too! Did you know that in English-speaking countries we say that cats say “meow” but in Japan they say that cats say “nya!” After watching this video, who do you think got it right, us or the Japanese? Because this kitten is totally saying “nya!”

kitty: Once my cat said “megarkik” but he was trying to meow and yawn at the same time. It didn’t work out so well.

“OK, that’s enough playing. Time for noms.” :D

  4. simonepdx says:

The kitten is cute, but the video is appalling. Anyone watching, please don’t play with kittens this way. Lots of later behavior issues can come from this!

    • angie says:

i was thinking that to because when they get bigger, they think its normal and it hurts you and makes them bad tempered, P,S my cat shouts the word meow !!

      • SquirrelBiscuit says:

I thought the same thing… he was a bit too rough and the cute kitten was on the defensive at times. Didn’t always look like playing to me. Never ever shake a baby! >^-.-^< *mew*

        • Long before dawn says:

Yes, not to your benefit to teach your kitten that your hand is a toy. Don’t make this a habit. What an cute itty bitty kitty.

    • Erin says:

I have to agree with you; the meowing is cute but it was a result of being irritated and threatened by a much larger animal.

    • Melanie says:

I agree, this encourages bad behavior. And couldn’t they tell that kitten was scared? The fur on its tail was on ends, and it wasn’t just fuzzy it was sticking out.

    • Triva says:

      I agree!

  5. kittin lover charlotte says:

that is the cutest, smallest, most adorable kitten i have ever seen!how heavy is he? how much was he?is he less then 1 pound?

  6. Amanda says:

    I agree, it’s totally “mew”.

  7. Libelly says:

She is so going to grow up to be Maru. Scottish Fold babies are the best!

  8. Deb Hall says:

    Awww!! So squeetable and boopable!!!

  9. Yui Daoren says:

I love kittens at that age.

(and most other ages, too. Just not pre-weened age. I leave that to momma-cat.)

I think a good onomatopoeia is “neu”.

  10. Sarah says:

So. Squee. This made my day. I didnt like scottish folds before now I want a bunch of them!

  11. CCC says:

And cats will recognize the sound – mine woke up out of a dead sleep (is there any other kind for a cat?) to come over and investigate.

  12. Shezael says:

In france we say kitties say MIAOU :)

PS : I think she says no MEOW,no NYA, Shez says only SQUEE ! :)

  13. Shezael says:

@CCC Mine did not even move a single ear oO …

  14. 6ToedCatsRule says:

Dis Kitteh am saying, RAARR, I am big scary monester!!

  15. Brigid says:

Sounds more like “reoo!” to me. With the occasional “nyoo!”

  16. “Quit playing and bring me noms!”

  17. 1000% minimum daily requirement of kawaii…. I think I’ve just OD’d on squee!

  18. kitty says:

Once my cat said “megarkik” but he was trying to meow and yawn at the same time. It didn’t work out so well.

    • MmeChalice says:

We call that a “me-yawn”, especially when kitty’s meow turns into a yawn :)

    • Villy says:

That totally made me giggle for a good 30 seconds.
My kitty says “mrowr” usually, but if she really wants something from me she says “mawm”

  19. id677 says:

This kitten is absolutely the custest ever but I thought the person was being a little rough with it. I “sort of” felt sorry for it. It is just a tiny baby and delicate.

  20. Star says:

kittens are a lot more resilient than most people think. that wasn’t rough at all.

    • Ms. A for Attitude says:

you’re right, they can handle a lot more than we give them credit for. my old cat since she was a kitten would play fight all the time like that with me but the minute i put my hand down calmly by her she stopped.

  21. nomnom55 says:

It sounds like meow with a twang

  22. TCinNC says:

That is a cute kitteh. Yeah they treated him a bit like a toy…and maybe they thought it was how you play but personally I wouldn’t want to encourage those behaviors in a cat!!

  23. Mia says:

In Sweden the kittehs says “Mjaou” :P

And i acutally played like this with the cats i come across and it havent harmed them or made them more aggressive. its quite common to play around and since the hand kinda becomes another cat well its normal if you ask me. cats playbite each other and scratch and such.

  24. Cricket says:

This video is definitely adorable. unfortunately, I too have to further the statement that you really shouldn’t play with kittens like that. Yes, it doesn’t always cause behavior issues, but it usually does.

I know from experience that if you play with a kitten that way they WILL develop a knack for playing it when they’re older. I played that game with my kitten and now, three years later, you still can’t touch his stomach without starting that game. Also, it can cause them to fear human interaction if you are too rough.

If you want a cat who likes its stomach petted, don’t play with them like this.

  25. Des says:

Cute ^^ It reminds me of my little kitten when he was that age :P

But I have to say the person is NOT being rough with the cat and will not encourage rough behavior later on. I’ve had kittens/cats my whole life. Cats play with each other a lot rougher than that, trust me. The current kitten I have now has been attacking my Silky Terrier since he was the size of this kitten and he has been making the dog cry since then as well (poor dog can’t handle pain well, we have to separate them when then KITTEN gets too rough). The teeth and claws on a kitten? Way worse than what this person is doing to it, trust me. They eventually learn that they shouldn’t use teeth/claws when playing, never had one use them when they were adults.

  26. Ballroomdancer says:

I agree with id677. The person in the video did treat the little kitten very roughly. And while this kitten is adorable, I think the orange scottish fold kitty that was posted a couple of days ago was cuter. :)

  27. JohnnyK says:

My girlfriends last cat (now sadly deceased) used to have a variety of noises – ‘Nau’ when he wanted you to get up or give him a treat was my favourite…

  28. Clawed Monet says:

Totally agree that lots of cats learn that it is o.k. to bite humans through this type of play behavior as kittens. It’s cute now but not when they are full grown. I’m sure some cats do fine and don’t get aggressive but some do. That kitten sounded like she was getting a bit irritated. I’d rather not take the chance. Cats do play bite each other and that’s fine, it’s not o.k. to bite us the same way.

  29. robyn says:

My cat says “Round.” If I’m outside, he’ll come walking up to me and say “Round.” I’ll say “yeah? Really?” and he’ll say “Round, yeah. Round.” And back and forth it goes: “yeah?” “round.”

  30. esprix says:

OMG I WANT TO NOM HIS EARS!

  31. squeeaddict says:

Awww, leave him alone already! This is double the squee, without the mean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNS6SUe-kGc

  32. CambridgeRatMom says:

That kitten is NOT having a good time. This is way too rough play and his meow is saying, please stop. I hate it when people are too rough with animals. This makes me very angry. Stupid human.

    • Alison says:

I think the kitty was having a fun time… he even came back for more (but lost his balance and decided food would be a better idea). I’ve had LOTS of cats in my life and all kittens want to play a little rough. The human was being very delicate with the kitty. If he was ever feeling threatened he would have not been interested in food at all.

  33. DMPursell says:

    Squee and boop=squoop!

  34. Nae says:

Scottish folds are my favorite breed of cat, they are just too adorable. Yet, a fold AND a munchkin…. I can’t possibly squee enough!! hehe

    • miranda says:

personally i prefer cats with lower instances of genetically entrenched lordosis and pectus excavatum. but i guess if that’s what you guys find cute…

  35. Rubyroo says:

I’ve watched the vid a couple times and I agree that the silly human was a bit rougher than I’d ever be with a little snuggie like that, and that there will be behavior issues going forward. There is a point, just before he goes in search of noms, where he seems to cautiously back away from ‘The Hand’, like it wasn’t necessarily all fun and games, but for the most part, he seemed to be playing along.

And, did I mention? Super squee!!

  36. Jorta says:

My kitteh peeps like a baby chick. She was found, tiny and pre-weaned, tangled deep in the inner branches of a sage bush at a fast food drive-thru where she and a couple of siblings were dumped. My daughter said she was literally screaming. She rescued Miss Peep and brought her to me, and she has never said ANYTHING but “peep” since that day! We think her vocal cords may have been damaged. But she peeps so squeeee-ly!

  37. kellie says:

holy hell .. that much cute needs to be monitored in small doses.

  38. Janet says:

I think the kitty is saying “Help” as he’s being played w/way too rough, especially for a tiny, tiny kitten like this.

  39. Claire says:

My cat Maia says “Mao”, but sometimes she’ll use a multisyllabic word and say “Mao-wow-wow-wow?”. And when she wants to go out on the front porch, she’ll say “out!”.

  40. Byot says:

Too much harrassing the cat will make a brat. And people wonder why some animals are holy terrors;)

  41. Claire says:

I love that in France, purring cats say ‘ronronronronron’

  42. Jorta says:

And in Germany, they say “schnurrr”

  43. Misty says:

My cats say a variety of things… Koko, who rarely speaks but has a louder meow says “Raaro” most often- usually when he wants someone to play or is wondering where someone is. Prince says “ow” most often. I didn’t realize it until I stood up with a migraine and said “ooooowww…” to which he replied “oooooow?” He’s horrified of going outside though, so on visits to the vet he’ll say “Mow” very loudly. He’ll also only go through the motions of meowing, but wont make a noise at all. its cute :3 as is this kitty, though I agree he’ll probably things hands are play-things later.

  44. Jen says:

the kitteh is saying STOP IT!!!!!!

  45. Jorta says:

So…if a kitteh is subjected to that kind of rough play when it’s tiny, how does one reverse the damage? How do you UN-teach that hands are chew-toys and scratching pads?

    • Misty says:

its hard. My youngest cat is a bit of a bitter, I think he learned the behavior before I got him. One suggestion I heard on a website was to gently hold them down until they stop but it doesn’t work on him- he thinks that makes it more fun. What works for him is to consistently stop the behavior. When the kitty bites, take the game away. Stand up, go to another room, etc. This includes telling your friends. Most of the time that’s how my guy friends will play with him- rather than using one of the gazillion cat toys. As a result he knows I don’t play like that… doesn’t stop him from trying on Saturday mornings.

    • simonepdx says:

If the kitteh still likes gentle pets, you can use slow-moving, gentle pets as a rewarding interaction when she’s able to stay calm, and withdraw immediately when she starts playing or snagging at your hand. As a separate activity, use appropriate toys with the kitten, giving praise or even treats when she directs her play to them. If the kitteh has already developed “aggressive” tendencies (like jumping on your feet, biting hands, pursuing people to snag or “play bite”), make sure to confine her in a kitteh-safe room full of appropriate things to do. Enter there to pet her and play with her _as long as she can be appropriate_, and immediately withdraw when her behavior changes back. I’ve seen this be quite successful with even older “aggressive-play” cats, though often–especially when the household goes through new stress–you need to be ready to go back to do this.

Also, some people have had success with the plug-in “calming pheromone” product, Feliway, when used in combination with a training treatment program. Feliway-type products are sold as other brands, too, which I assume would be similarly effective

      Good luck!

  46. Alice says:

    Sounds like he’s saying ‘nyeew!’

  47. Rusty says:

i think what this kitten is saying is closer to “nya” than “meow.” i dont think ive had a cat that ever actually said “meow.” most of the time they either sound like peacocks or they say something more like “row” like an r sound before the word ow.

  48. the_strange_cat says:

I think it’s saying, “MOO!” in a really high-pitched voice. My cat Peggy says, “MEOW!!!” My other kitty Potter says, “oooo?”

  49. miiii says:

    this is almost unbearably cute.

also, did kitty eat a swallow earlier?

  50. Jennifer says:

Ours used to say ‘yummy’ when she growled and ate food at the same time.

  51. Miri says:

One of my cats says “mayor”. “Mayor” I want some food. I tease her, I say “where’s your keys to the city?”. I think kitteh in vidieo is saying ‘nee-you”. In Spanish it’s miau for meow and rronrronear for purr. Best word ever.
