Sad Loris is Slow And Sad

Another day, another Slow Loris. But this one’s looking a little down in the dumps.

I tried to talk to him about his binge-eating, and he told me he only eats when he’s depressed. Then I gave him a hug. And another piece of fruit. Feel better soon, Emo Loris!

They really are adorable. It’s sad that they’re endangered and that the pet “trade” for them is so brutal and might just wipe out the species.

It is sad that they are endangered. The wild species has failed to adapt to a changing environment. An illegal pet trade is certainly no help because the upkeep of the wild species is problematic for typical pet owners for many reasons. Too many who want to have one beyond good recommendations just see the cute eyes and think it would be nice to have a critter that looked like it came from the store in a Littlest Pet Shop box. That hardly makes for a responsible pet owner.

However, let me suggest that a legal pet trade that warranted the intentional speciation of a hardier breed that was suitable for life with humans may be the only hope to keep the Loris alive. I don’t know if anyone has tried this with these animals or not, but if behavioral and diet characteristics could be modified through breeding, then it seems that a market for saving a domesticated breed of Loris through licensing a more responsible pet owners and breeders could be an option.
