Itty Bitty Pretty Puma

cute baby animals - Itty Bitty Pretty Puma

In case you didn’t know, pumas (aka mountain lions, cougars, etc.) are the largest cat that can still purr. Which basically makes them the best cat ever ever ever. And they are SO. FREAKING. CUTE. when they are little! Words cannot describe how much I want to snuggle this baby right now.

  3. Maria says:

    Tigers can purr too.

    • Seanette says:

I was just going to say the same thing, from first-hand experience. As far as I know, they’re bigger than pumas, too. :)

    • Alix says:

Actually, they cannot. NONE of the ‘big cats’ can. Rule of nature: If they can roar (lion, tiger, leopard *not snow, spotted or clouded* & jaguar), they can not purr. If they can purr, then they can not roar.

Puma’s can purr, not roar. Tigers roar, and don’t purr. They can, however, perform prusten aka: chuffing, which is a low-pitched vocalization that uses the same anatomical parts as purring in the smaller cats does. however, they can not sustain it for very long and it comes in bursts, whereas purring can go on and on and on and peaks and flows with inhales and exhales.

    • Skelepunk says:

Seriously, why do you people type like an epileptic six year old? This is where grownups go, deary. Go play in the sandbox and get off mummy’s computer.

      • Oh, Ziva says:

You should see Icanhascheezburger comment sections. Hordes of adult men and women speaking babytalk to each other. It’s a bit unsettling.

        • milieus says:

That’s why I don’t go there. It terrifies me. The next level? Spelling will cease to exist altogether. *Shudders* Please hold me… I’m scared for the future.

      • Roguefemme says:

Way to be a humorless spoilsport there. I’m sure somebody sufficiently rude could make snide commends about grownups going to a website just to squee over cute animals too.

Why don’t you just calm down and let people have fun?

        • The Crapture says:

as one of the ancient inhabitants of ICHC, i will hazard that it’s because this is the internet and it just wouldn’t be the same without a few cranky people taking pointlessly asinine swipes at LOLspeakers just so they can say to themselves that they felt superior to SOMEBODY for a minute

  6. Daveo says:

I once saw a puma at a big cat refuge. He had been kept like a housecat in someones basement; but not kept well since his tail had frozen off. Anyway when I talked “pretty” to him through the wire link fence he started to purr. Let me tell ya, when a Puma purrs they sound like a lawnmower engine. Much more loud than your standard housepet!

  7. mopapa says:

I think almost all cats, big and small, are beautiful, but pumas/cougars/mountain lions are the most gorgeous creatures in the world! Absolutely breathtaking!

  8. Greycat says:

    Beautiful Cougar photo Here… http://photos3.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/6/5/6/5/600_21445957.jpeg

The photo was taken at the Oregon Zoo in Portland Oregon

  9. Kiki says:

Puma’s are technically in the same category as house cats. Put it this way: they are the largest of the small cats. The difference between small cats and big cats is: small cats can purr but cannot roar while large cats can roar, not purr. Tigers and certain leopard breeds do this thing called “chuffing” which sounds a lot like purring, but it’s different.

I love you, in a totally platonic way. This is also due to the structure of their hyoid bones. I’m in a docent program at a zoo while waiting to start school for zoo technology, and one of the keepers came in and gave us a presentation on felines, it was really interesting!

    • Bee says:

It’s quite hilarious to hear a big cat like a puma or a cheetah meow, just like a little kitty (and it’s so freaking adorable!).

  10. Ashley says:

They squeak as well, quite possibly one of the most adorbz things I’ve ever heard in my life.

  11. Jennifer says:

Sorry to say, but the Eastern Cougar is now officially extinct in the U.S. :(

  12. Lizzy says:

If anyone is interested, the photographer of this piece has a website here (I used to follow him on deviantART and recognized this picture immediately – it really should be credited to him) http://www.wildbydesign.ca/

  14. Gabster says:

My aunt is actually part of a mountain lion rescue organization! And they are the cutest, especially around this age! They love to tromp around and wrestle! And the best to cuddle and nap with! Loudest purr EVER! <3 <3 <3

  15. adele says:

i know for a fact that cheetahs purr. had the honour of having a bush-walk with two lion cubs and a cheetah. was awesome.
