VIDEO: Getting a Little Lion Love

Squeep! I know these aren’t itty bitty big cats, but still… I think I want a (legal) pet lion more than anything else in the whole wide world.

Incorrect source or offensive?

adorable video. the caption makes me kinda sad though. why do people always want wild animals to be pets? i would like more lions in the wild, and less in zoos plz.

    • ChibiSkittles says:

same reason people sought to tame and domesticate them centuries ago?

      • LaLaLa says:

Ummm… lions are NOT “tame” or “domesticated.” You must be thinking of house cats. Easy to confuse, huh? ;-)

      • Cambridge Rat Mom says:

sorry, but lions have not been “domesticated.” Habituated to humans, perhaps, but not domesticated. There’s a very big difference.

        • Ryan Waxx says:

          Hello, Outrage Patrol?

I think that by paying attention to the question he was answering, you might realize he was saying that people sought to tame and domesticate WILD ANIMALS centuries ago, not lions. Therefore pointing out that lions aren’t domesticated is to totally miss his point.

Why don’t you go find a nice video about a chinchilla and whip yourself into a froth about that. After all, they weren’t kept as pets until the 1900′s and fail (most) definitions of domestication.

    • miss riddle says:

I don’t see why you are concerned with people wanting lions as pets. I would love to have a big cat a pet bu that doesn’t mean I’m going to go get one, or something.

I don’t see why we can’t have both wild versions and zoo versions of an animal, honestly. My gerbils aren’t in their natural environment and they are doing just fine.

  2. Dani says:

those lionesses love him so much. that’s so cute!!!

  3. Kyuuki-chan says:

those are young males, not lionesses.

  4. Hollywood Tigress says:

i totally love the video but i agree with giraffebutt. big cats belong in the wild, and that cute little kitty has to grow up someday. not to mention most big cat cubs arrive in the US via the Black Market. i’d love a tiger cub too, but im not ready for the potentially fatal risks.

    • Not really much risk! Is more dangerous to your health to smoke or drive a motorcycle. But it gonna cost him a leg anyway, they eat about their weight in meat a week!!!

    • Me says:

I think the comment writer was being facetious. I don’t think you need to worry about her actually getting a lion.

      • Hollywood Tigress says:

i know. sorry i sounded so harsh. i just hate seeing these animals suffer when their owners can’t take care of them. on top of that, i was having a bad day, and im sure she would take great care of it if she did.

        • Ryan Waxx says:

The suffering is taking place between your ears, because it sure as heck isn’t taking place in the video.

Do some exotics end up in tragic situations? Yes. Do domesticated animals also end up in tragic situations? Also yes. What’s the difference? Some fool pontificating that the animals should be “in the wild” when in fact they have not even the faintest clue as to weather the animal would in fact be better off in the wild.

    • idogis1 says:

With the poaching problem, it’s probably for the best that there is some breeding stock in captivity now.

Wait ’till it settles down a bit in the region, then you can start working on rebuilding the lion population.

  5. Katie says:

I love these videos and it makes me think about potentially raising big cats for zoos. getting them as a cub and raise them to about 6-8 months then donating them to zoos. idk something maybe one day.

  6. Rayne90 says:

I love it! Even big kitties likes head bonks!!!!

  7. Awesome Applesauce says:

Hah, that guy is so “Fine, whatever, hugs and kisses but enough with the cuddling, c’mon guys…”

  8. Michirusan says:

Ok, big kitties are too cute! And slight problem with the title of this…they’re both males!

  9. Ambius says:

Actually, these are young male lions…NOT lionesses.

  10. saylo says:

Aw, I want lion hugs and kisses too!

  11. Skate 08 says:

    I don’t know who’s cuter – the lions or that guy!?! ;)

  12. Jen says:

giraffe and tigress, I’m pretty sure this is at a preserve somewhere

  13. Ro says:

Haha, they sound like dinosaurs! And why does the guy look bored and unamused?? Tag me in!
And I say I want to eat babies all the time, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to go and do it, I know I’d get in trouble.

  14. Shrapnel says:

Judging by the way those two young males are rubbing and head-bonking, the human is more than a friend in their eyes, he’s family.

  15. LaLaLa says:

The guy looks really familiar – I think he was in a video with a new mama lion who was giving him the same rub-a-dub-dub treatment. I think it was on cute overload??

  16. jane says:

@Skate 08 – you are so right! the guy is a cutie too :)

  17. Mia says:

Yeah it looks like some preserve somewhere and maybe these two had lost their mommeh when they where small. Nobody knows.

But dang that seems to be some rough snuggling considering how heacy those cats are xD

  18. KittyMarthaPoo says:

It is incredibly cool how much they love him.

My guess is that this is some sort of wild animal sanctuary & he is their caretaker.

  19. Kabs says:

This is Adam and Jagger, two orphaned male lions located in the Seaview Lion Park in South Africa. They are part of a program that is being used to breed lions for both captivity and release to the wild. As it is, the cubs that they are selling are only being sent to zoos and other conservation groups, for breeding purposes as well. Seaview Lion Park has a very stringent breeding process and is trying to offer Zoos and other organizations an alternative to capturing wild animals.

In 2011, it is their plan to utilize 20ha (approx 50 acres) of presently unused land for the purpose of building a healthy pride of lions which we hope can eventually be released into the wild. The area will be fenced and we will build a hide from where staff and volunteers will be able to monitor the lions.

At present, the lion population is approximately 55, of which nearly 25 are sub-adults and cubs. All the lion cubs born at the Park are hand-reared and for the small fee of R60.00 (About 8 Dollars US), may be handled by the public. The healthy, adorable cubs continue to receive many accolades. They are inoculated against all known feline diseases and rabies, and are free of Feline AIDS and TB. All the cubs are micro-chipped.

14 white lions have been successfully bred in the park since 2003 and they can all be seen at the Park. The aim of the Park’s continued breeding program is to create a larger gene pool, from which to breed healthy white lions and to conserve this rare species.

  20. Feral Boy says:

They ALWAYS do this with their dinner

  21. pudlover1 says:

just love the “pudlings”. Had the GREATEST thrill when 32 years ago I had my picture taken with a 4 month on lion cub….what a moment!!!!!!

  22. Derek says:

I agree this is completely adorable, but lions are not “pets”.

They are wild animals that belong in the Savannah and they should not come into contact with humans unless there are extraordinary circumstances (like these two, they are orphaned).

Please don’t get exotic animals :) Don’t contribute to the problem.

Get an abandoned cat or dog, they are domesticated already and there is always need for loving homes.

  23. Nancy says:

Maybe those cats were orphaned in the wild and if they hadn’t been taken in they would have died.. these were healthy lions, they aren’t always in the wild and they die at a much earlier age. Geez..

  24. idogis1 says:

How awesome does your job have to be for lion hugs to be an annoyance?

  25. Mew says:

This guy is a lucky bastard T-T i want some lion hugs too

  26. mehmeh says:

Ah, envy… Must be the “forbidden fruit” resemblance. This isn´t really natural, so I MUST love it :)

  27. Lawlin says:

That guys has the best job on the face of the earth.

  28. abble says:

I am SO JEALOUS!!! They are such incredible beasts. And while I regularly cry at zoos (especially with the elephants & great apes, who seem to know that they don’t belong there, which kills me) I also understand that many of the species in zoos are used in global breeding programs to keep the species alive, as they are being killed off at an alarming rate. So we need to weigh the good & the bad of it.

As for the hottie being all friendly with the lions, most facilities try to balance keeping the animal behavior as natural as possible, while getting them used to being around the humans who care for them, which makes it safer for all animals involved.

And most rational people would never consider a big cat to be a good candidate for a pet. Rather like a polar bear or wolf. They may be ‘social’ animals, but are still wild & can kill a person in an instant if they so choose.

  29. Zac C. says:

Those two must be like the spoiled twins of the Pride: “play with us! We wanna wrestle. …he likes me best! no, me!”

  30. Kathleen says:

I really love this. I want lion hugs and kisses!
