Whatsit Wednesday: Heartbroken Hedgie Needs a Friend

cute baby animals - Whatsit Wednesday: Heartbroken Hedgie Needs a Friend

Betty the bald hedgehog is currently spineless and friendless after developing a strange skin condition that caused her to lose all of her spines — a circumstance which has caused her to lack the self-confidence to socialize with her hedgehog peers.

“She’s healthy, but it’s sad,” said Tonia Garner of the Foxy Lodge Wildlife Rescue. “She lives alone in an enclosure indoors. We hope the spines will come back so she has a normal life.”

… but you know what, squee lovers? Even without her lovely spines, I still think Betty is adorable! And I would gladly be her friend if given the chance! Rescuers are hopeful that Betty may one day soon recover her spines, so I think we as friends of cute baby animals everywhere need to band together to wish for her swift recovery!

Awww….she is a cutie! I’ll be her friend, too!

  5. Ben Lepus says:

she’s a trendsetter – i bet next year all the hedgies will be bald- but by then she will have moved on to cooler looks

  6. Mandy says:

Aww, that is sad. I understand they would want her to live a normal, wild life, but if she doesn’t grow the spines back, why not adopt her out to a loving family? It may take some getting used to, but surely a happy life with humans is better than a lonely life in the wild? Poor girl :(

  7. Christina says:

I think she’s unique and lovely. What makes us beautiful are the imperfections. She’s probably kept inside because quills are actually modified hairs and she may have difficulties staying warm. Also, a lack of quills may render her unprotected from predators or even other hedgies’ quills.

    • quantakiran says:

maybe they can make her a jacket with simulated quills for mating purposes and keeping her warm?

i know it probably won’t do much to protect her from predators but maybe she finds a knight in shining quills to protect her? just a thought.

  8. Sara says:

Aww, I will gladly be your friend, Betty! First order of duty- get Betty some ice cream, stat! That always helps sad girls!

  9. quantakiran says:

so sad. I really hope her spines grow back!

  10. Czaerana says:

    I’ll boop Betty!

  11. kiwi says:

There was a bald hedgie before Bettey, and it grew its spines back, so perhaps there’s hope.

Maybe this sounds weird, but I feel a human-to-animal kinship with Betty. I have eczema (a skin condition, if someone doesn’t know) and it gets pretty bad and I don’t want to be around people because I’m so self-conscious about it. I know how you feel, Betty!

    • quantakiran says:

Eczema is out of your control and the more you stress about it the worse it gets (my niece has it).

No one is perfect and if people don’t accept you for the way you look (which is out of your control as well unless you do plastic surgery) then that’s their loss/problem not yours!

It’s the inside that matters not the outside!

    • chiowa says:

if betty wasn’t wild i’m sure they would have loved to adopt her out to you. i’ve heard stories of special dogs being placed with people who are in similar situations (amputees, ex-fight dogs and parolees, etc.)

That thing looks like the left nut of a bull.

    • Stormi says:

      …and you know, how???

      • Ottermom says:

If you don’t know, then that means you live a sheltered life and have never been to a county fair. I was going to say that it looks like a rhinoceros ass. And yes, I’ve seen one of those at the zoo.

But on a more sensitive note, I want to hold her and pat her so that she makes a “slap-slap” sound like a naked sphinx cat that I once cuddled… it was very warm and nakkies! :)

  14. Phil the Cat says:

Wow, looks like a grey Daruma doll.

I hope she does get her spines back.

  15. Sonya says:

I hope she makes a full recover!!!
