Carmen says: “My two new baby degus (about seven weeks old), getting used to their new home. They totally ignored the nest I prepared for them and decided that the best place to sleep was the exercise wheel.”
I don’t know if it’s true, but I’m going to be exasperated and say it anyway: Psssk, typical degu behavior.

They are adorable!
Just a note to their human though – when my partner bought our gerbils, we were warned that wheels like the one pictured, with big gaps between the rungs, can be risky for long-tailed critters, because their tails can get caught as the wheel spins.
Those are not gaps, they are just bumps in the wheel for traction(?).But thank you for your concern!
You’re right about the wheel and it’s not just for long-tailed critters either. I used to have hamsters (who have short, stubby tails) and learned that those wheels are dangerous for all the little critters because their legs can get caught in between the rungs (definitely even more dangerous for those with long tails.) Their legs and feet are so tiny and skinny that one slip could cause a serious injury.
There are wheels out there that are solid but you can also make a wheel like the one pictured solid and safe by cutting a strip of cardboard and weaving it in and out of the rungs. Of course, that cardboard may get nibbled on and/or torn apart and need to be replaced!
The degus are definitely adorable! I’ve heard of them but don’t know anything about them.

Aw, I used to have one of these! They bathe in dust like chinchillas do, and yes, they ARE quite contrary!
AWWWW Degus are such good pets! And its so nice to see that you bought two to be little buddies together:)
I love your little pets so adorable, but never heard of them.. are they a form of hamster or something else?
they are like a mixture of chinchilla, bunny, squirrel and mice.
I have two of them (7 year old seniors) myself.
That cage (if it is the Ferplast Olympia) should be burned. Not even suitable for hamsters let alone Degus.
My sis used to have 2 of them, now only one, sadly. they are soooo cute and really friendly, but their room is constantly full of their wheel squeaking. its annoying, but i cant stay mad at them…
