Heartwarming Friendship of the Day

cute baby animals - Heartwarming Friendship of the Day

When Themba the baby elephant lost his mother after she fell down a cliff, he was rescued by a team at the Shamwari Rehabilitation Centre.

While at the center, Themba quickly befriended a sheep named Albert, and the two quickly became inseparable. Albert took on a guardian role for Themba, and to this day he stays by the elephant’s side while he eats, drinks, plays, roams and sleeps. The two companions have also recently befriended a baby giraffe, who will hopefully soon be able to participate in Themba and Albert’s fun and games.

The baby elephant (Themba) passed away from a twisted gut, just before he was due to be released back to the wild. :(
The giraffe (Melvin) was successfully released back to the wild.
The sheep (Albert) continues to offer friendship and support to orphaned, wild animals :)

  11. Nikki says:

Awww ;___; I watched the last episode of this a few days ago but I’m glad people like them so much. The giraffe does become their playmate!

Unlikely Friendships! I know it’s in bookstores in Australia, but not sure if it’s anywhere else. They made it into the book though and it’s filled with awesome stories like theirs :)

Alas, not ‘to this day’ for Themba died just before he was due to be released back into the wild.

Themba and Albert’s friendship was an amazing example of cross-species affection.

Sadly, Themba died in 2010 of torsion of the intestine, and was buried on the Shamwari grounds. http://www.shamwari.com/propertynewsarticle.asp?id=84

Sorry to be a debbie downer. Rest in peace, Themba. T-T

    I loved this story.

Sad to say it had an unhappy ending when Themba the baby elephant died of intestinal torsion.
