Baby Hummer Handful

cute animals - Baby Hummer Handful

remembersarah says: “This baby humming bird was knocked out of a tree near my apartment. Some little boys were trying to feed him worms, so I took him home and made a batch of sugar water for his belly to nom. He was uber friendly and loved being held and licked sugar water out of my hand and off my fingers. I had him outside in a wicker basket overnight, and his mommy ended up coming back for him! True precious story! Highlight of my life.”

What a heartwarming story! Thank you for saving our feathered friend!

  2. Brynhild says:

More like a fingerful. A tiny jewel.

  3. Kale says:

Awww, how totally amazing that story and picture are! I love hummingbirds and you’ve done what I’ve always wanted – held one.

  4. 2ScoopsRice says:

What a smug lil look on its face!! Its like, “Isn’t it ridiculous how adorable I am?”

  5. Mini57 says:

I can’t believe some kids were trying to feed him worms. Don’t they teach these kids anything in school anymore? (I’m guessing they were of school age, but perhaps not.)
When I was in kindergarten, I remember we had lessons on animals all the time with cute little songs and pictures. That was probably one of the reasons I loved animals so much, because I was taught about them, but most kids do anyway.

Very squee baby anyway. Glad it had a happy ending and his mama came back for him! I just love humming birds.
Used to see them a lot back in the day, but now not so much.

    • remembersarah says:

the kids were quite young, i don’t think they realized it was a hummingbird. but they were being rough on him, which is why i took him away so quickly! he was so delicate!

  6. Ryan Waxx says:

Actually, his mommy didn’t come for him. He tried to fly away, fell a couple stories to the ground, and as he lay in the road stunned from the fall, a guy heading to the convenience store for a late-night vanilla energy drink ran him over, leaving no traces except two tiny, bloody feathers that were sucked into the sewer grate.

  7. Jesse says:

Aww, little hummybirds are so squee. The ones in my backyard squeak while they’re feeding.

  8. tree says:

    Awwww! its sooo cute! <3

  9. Nancy says:

How wonderful!! Good for you for helping! My mom has silk flower baskets outside her door, and I always feel so bad when I see little hummers out there flitting around looking for food!! They keep trying though! :)

  10. Chantal L says:

He left it outside in a basket overnight…is anyone else afraid that a neighbourhood cat came for it, not its mother?

    • remembersarah says:

i had the basket covered with another wicker basket, and when i woke up, his mom was sitting on top of the basket and they were sqeaking at each other. so i took the top basket off and waited inside the window and watched her come and help him out of the basket and in to the bushes. within a few days they were both coming back to eat at the hummingbird feeder i put out for them. :)

    • Dogbolter says:

No, because most of us aren’t joy-sucking, terminally pessimist care trolls like you are.

  11. epiphanystar says:

Aww! My Grandparents have a cabin in North Carolina, and watching the hummingbirds is just awesome.

If you wear bright colored shirts they’ll get really close :P
